Jon described the GUI behavior exactly as is occurs on my system. I'll try installing python3-uno and see if that is a viable workaround.

Regardless of whether or not the workaround is functional, the startup code should have at least one exception handler so OpenLP can perform a clean shutdown (and maybe give the user a helpful popup message).
