Now I have tested how mkusb can create persistent live drives with Thomas Schmitt's modifications with the xorriso command line.
It is still working when using usb-pack-efi (and the default GPT)
- in the Lenovo V130 in UEFI mode with secure boot and
- in the Dell Precision M4800 both in BIOS mode and UEFI mode

With default settings (not using usb-pack-efi), a persistent live drive by mkusb works in UEFI mode (both in the Lenovo V130 and the Dell Precision M4800). But it does not work in BIOS mode. (This may be a headache for me, but not for the Ubuntu developers, and I mention it only for information.)
