Distribution: Ubuntu 10.10 64-Bit
Package hint: nvidia-current (260.19.06 from Ubuntu repositories)
Impact: complete system freeze

Description:
I did not experience any problems with Ubuntu 10.04 and Nvidia drivers version 256.
Also everything was alright with Ubuntu 10.10 and the default nouveau driver.
Then I installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers (version 260.19.06) via the Ubuntu "additional drivers" tool.
Since then the system always freezes after about two minutes after booting. The display color-shifts to violet like after overdoing overclocking and the system doesn't even react on SysRqs. This behavior is reproducable. The system has not been manually overclocked and was at very low temperatures all the time.

Workaround:
Installing the binary driver provided at nvidia.com (version 260.19.12) resolved the bug and now everything works as expected.

Suggestion:
Update package nvidia-current in the repositories to version 260.19.12 or later.
