Ubuntu uses a different shortcu to show the desktopt: ctrl-alt-d.

You can change to use windows key+d under 'System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts' and scroll until you find 'Hide all windows and show the desktop background'.

Does that solve your problem?
