This does fix the issue. We probably didn't select "install closed-source codecs" in the installation.
However, I think Music/Noise should be more helpful, informing the user about what is missing and offering to install the codecs. I remember seeing other music players (rhythmbox, may be?) do that.
I figured I must have been missing some codec, so I tried to install every codec under the sun until it worked. Less tech-inclined users will be lost.
