If it is fedora: /etc/sysconfig/networ..... files get edited
if it is ubuntu /etc/network/interfaces gets edited
To get past that change the following line in
/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
[ifupdown]
managed=false
from managed=false to managed=true.
