Probably I should link to the changelog for the ubuntu pre-proposed rather than the kernel.org (i.e., "mainline" one):

It looks like Ubuntu's 3.2.0-40 is based on Linux 3.2.40, with the same changes to the i915 driver --I just didn't notice the version number difference before.
