Have you tried to dissable "start at startup" in Gnome do and making the system start it instead? That works for me on Jaunty.
I have not tried to add a sleep statement, but for it to work we need to know if gnome do inherits the faulty environment variables from the launch script or if it gets new ones because of the sleep statement.
