Doesn't this have more to do with who owns the process than when it is started? The system owns the process when it is started with the system, and the user owns the process when it is started manually. To me, that seems like why it would get confused in opening the home folder. Surely, there's a way to debug the output somehow.

Please don't add a delay to start-up.... Ugh.
