If I boot into recovery mode i get a similar result. The boot process hangs after uploading the firmware. If I press Ctrl-Alt-Del the process goes on until it reports that it cannot start the X-Server. I logged into a terminal and started aptitude, which reported that it could not lock the lock-file as the harddisk was in a read only state.
Nevertheless should all packages been up to date yesterday, as I can boot with the linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic and updated them. The problem with the missing hal occurs only afterwards, when I use the linux-image-2.6.24-16(15)-generic and the problem with the hang during boot does not occur.
