on a fresh modprobe, /dev/raw1394 gets these permissions:
supermario@portablemario:~$ ls -alh /dev/raw1394
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 171, 0 2008-03-01 14:01 /dev/raw1394

Can you track down where suddenly permissions were changed to root:root?
