2) Which version of Linux were you using?
3) from the output that you report, I think that there could be a problem in the installation of MySQL Sandbox itself.
Can you repeat the command as follows?
mkdir -p $HOME/opt/mysql export SBDEBUG=3 make_sandbox mysql-standard-4.1.22-pc-linux-gnu-i686-glibc23.tar.gz
