Had the same problem using the e169 from virgin but got it to work by manually editing the connection settings and changing the APN and turning off CHAP.

The mobile broadband setup wizard puts in the APN as "VirginInternet" but the Virgin website says it is "VirginBroadband", once this was changed manually and the CHAP options turned off for authentication it works.

i think there is defiantly a bug with it, but it seems to save if you also tick or untick the connect automatically option after turning off the chaps.

The same problem here in Spain with a Vodafone 3G/GPRS card (Option 129 or "Colt").

With a Vodafone SIM it does nothing but network manager applet going in circles trying to connect. (Like auth problem?)

Tested with a Simyo SIM card and it works fine and at 3G speed, the only problem is that nm asks for a PIN when connecting but the card has PIN disabled. (Maybe wants "+CPIN: READY" but the card answers "+CPIN: SIM PIN2" when no PIN is needed to "AT+CPIN?"...).

In Australia with a Virgin Mobile Broadband card (e169) the APN in the connection settings gets set to VirginInternet, this is incorrect, it works for me when changed to VirginBroadband. Also the username and password set to the word 'blank'. It would be good to have this updated in their database of information on the mobile broadband providers.

This link explains how I fixed it for me in Ubuntu 9.04 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014221

In Ubuntu 9.10, I'm also effected by https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/446146 which makes things even more complicated.

I can put some effort for this bug with some guidance.

As per my post here (http://urbanoia.net/?p=509), I have found that the APN "virgininternet" works for me. Note that when using 3G data on my phone, sometimes the 3G data access point is displayed as "Virgin Internet", and other times it is displayed as "Virgin Broadband" or "Virgin Streaming". Perhaps it depends on the cell tower i am connected to?

I have been unable to get tethering working via the network manager, instead i use manual binding and wvdial.

When I open "Network Connections", there is a "Mobile Broadband" tab, which appears to have all the relevant settings, however there is no way that I can see to activate this - not available from the bluetooth applet or network applet.

Details of my system:
Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook edition
Asus Eee PC 1201pn
Nokia 5800 software ver 50.0.005
