Or interpret any shrink to 0 as a "turn this column off". Maybe both: anything between 1 and 5 would shrink to a minimum of 5, but actually shrinking it to 0 would just turn it off. It's not totally intuitive what's going on at first, but at least when you go to add columns back in they'd be visible.
