I just learned that this is not limited to GAIN.

* Start Mixxx trunk with waveform off and no Midi device connect
* Do not load any track
* Mixxx is idle , CPU is around 5%
* Now move any slider or rotary
* CPU goes up to 20%

Hope it helps to investigate this any further.
