I was looking into this idea recently too.
I think a better paradigm would be to make it possible for crates to be included in more than one parent crate.
Not only is that more convenient, but it would also obviate the problem with sub-item locks.

I'm working on some other crate-related issues right now; hopefully I can get to this soon.
