Maybe it would be worth using realtime priorities, and prioritizing the threads accordingly. (Ie, have all CPU and IO related to live playing music marked as "realtime", and the remaining (loading new media, analysis) as not.

I can empathise at how drastic a code change this probably is. On the plus side, it could make Mixxx's playback nearly bullet-proof.
