Sure, but it also seems odd that a user-land application could cause the OS itself to hang. :) Unless there's a kernel bug in the version of the OS you have (are you on the latest?) that the Qt framework Mixxx uses is doing just the wrong thing to trigger. While it may not be the HD specifically, this type of thing is usually a hardware or driver problem. (Spinning HDs just tend to be the first hardware components to fail.)
