Having looked at a couple of similar bugs - https://bugs.launchpad.net/mixxx/+bug/1789059 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/mixxx/+bug/1791510 - it's occurred to me I wasn't that descriptive when I said this hangs my entire system. It freezes the GUI (with the exception of the mouse cursor, though eventually that succumbs too), but if a track is playing the audio will continue for maybe a minute before the system quits and takes me to (for some reason) the login screen...
