okay, given the chance of us poking nvidia to fix this old/rotting driver, i'm working on accomodating the brokenness by acquiring snapshots via renderbuffers instead of textures.
I noticed surfaceflinger notes in some of the comments for code around the time of this driver that some 'old drivers' have difficulty with this as well.
