John, I've pushed a fix that allows to use old federated with mariadb. It is not in rpm yet and not in any release, but if you're willing to build from source you can use it. Otherwise you can wait for the next release, although I cannot guarantee that this will get into binary rpms - it will certainly be in the source tarballs, but as for rpms it's not decided yet :(
