This is related to libzdb pooling behaviour rather than the bug - ConnectionPool_getConnection() returns NULL if a connection isn't available. I've updated the test case to account for this @ https://github.com/sydneystockholm/mariadb-bug-1039277/commit/c2b62b8f60a948b468e4f341a47c36ac7df601f6
