The current UID grab command doesn't work on Solaris (2.6 &
8 tested).

I'd recommend this instead:
ps -o user -p $$|tail -1

This is tested and works on RH 6.2, RH 7.3, RHEL 2.1, RHEL3,
FC3, FreeBSD 4.9, Solaris 2.6, 8.
