Last week I instrumented the deb-based install I mentioned in Comment #15 so that I can get a traceback next time it hangs:

ubuntu@avoton01:~$ sudo grep FAULT /etc/systemd/system/maas-regiond.service
Environment="PYTHONFAULTHANDLER=1"

Unfortunately, the issue has not reoccurred there since.
