Yes, now working after the following:

Copy certificates to /usr/share/ca-certificates/internal
Add internal/certificate.crt to /etc/ca-certificates.conf
update-ca-certificates

Yes, this is one machine that is a region & rack controller.

python3-pyvmomi is already installed, so perhaps this happened automatically when python-pyvmomi was installed.
