Bug Description

Lucid has version 2.0.9 of syslog-ng. This is a very old release, many important features were added to syslog-ng, since 2.X was released. Ubuntu Maverick has version 3.1.1, and hopefully will get 3.1.2 before release (which is available in Debian testing and there is a separate bug for it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/623181 ).

There are many new features:
- SSL
- database support
- patterndb
- filtering
- rewriting
- etc.
For a more detailed list, please check: http://www.balabit.hu/downloads/files/syslog-ng/sources/2.1.4/changelog-en.txt , http://www.balabit.hu/downloads/files/syslog-ng/sources/3.0.8/changelog-en.txt and http://www.balabit.hu/downloads/files/syslog-ng/sources/3.1.2/changelog-en.txt

syslog-ng is a leaf package, there are no packages depending on it.

The configuration for version 3.X changed slightly, but syslog-ng can use the original 2.X configuration file without modifications (it assumes, that any unversioned configuration files are from 2.0, which is true in this case).

OK, tested basic functionality (no database tests yet), and it seems to work fine. I'll try databases, but most likely not this week.
Thanks for packaging!

Database support (mysql) is also tested now, and it works fine.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/503621 also confirms that it works.

$ apt-cache rdepends syslog-ng
syslog-ng
Reverse Depends:
 jffnms

Please test jffnms with it too. It only needs to be basic testing.

I spent an hour trying to set up jffnms, but it failed well before I could test the syslog-ng part:

[Sun Aug 29 22:47:34 2010] [error] [client 192.168.2.179] PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function authenticate() on a non-object in /usr/share/jffnms/htdocs/auth.php on line 50

It's a php problem, and I could find a solution by using Google.

I looked at the manual at www.jffnms.org/docs/jffnms.pdf how it is connected to mysql. It uses a helper script, which should work as before. It could even work without the helper script, as syslog-ng version 3.1 is able to log to mysql directly.

Syslog-ng in Maverick is now updated to 3.1.2, which has many bugfixes included. Could you also update?
