Bug Description

Since installing Xubuntu 20.04.2, I see the UI screen after resuming from suspend, but frozen: The mouse moves fine, but nothing else works (no keyboard, no mouse clicks).

I can Ctrl+Alt+F1 to a shell, and there everything seems normal.

This used to work fine on the same hardware running on Xubuntu 18.04.

Another user reported that after about 30 seconds, it reverts back to normal:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1315913/lock-screen-slow-on-ubuntu-20-04/1318618#1318618

I've temporarily disabled "lock screen on suspend". Since this works fine, it doesn't feel like a hardware issue?

Thanks in advance!

Update: I've added a panel with a clock, so I can say that the GUI is actually still running/active: The clock continues.

I cannot confirm that anything works after 30 seconds: The clock showed 3 minutes have passed. Nothing has changed.

Any ideas?

I am having the same issue and I've found that having firefox running in the background seems to be related to the problem. Closing it before locking the screen eliminates the issue for me. Firefox isn't using an inordinate amount of resources however so I am not sure what the problem could be. I am going to test with other browsers as well.

@Daniel:
The notification got lost in my emails, therefore the late reply.

You're right, it'd be strange if FF would be causing this yet I'd be happy if that would at least allow to workaround this issue for the time being. Will give it a try.

It's odd:
Now the "lock screen when system is going to sleep" doesn't lock the screen at all anymore. I'm not locked out anymore, but having a non-locked-suspended Notebook laying around doesn't feel right at all... ;)

I'm not 100% sure if the following links are definitely related, but there seem to be some issues currently with xfce4-screensaver, lock & suspend in general:

  * [Issue #45: "xfce4-screensaver 0.1.10 causes a delay in suspend action"](https://gitlab.xfce.org/apps/xfce4-screensaver/-/issues/45)
  * [Xubuntu 20.04 - Suspend waits 30 seconds](https://askubuntu.com/questions/1233858/xubuntu-20-04-suspend-waits-30-seconds)

Sorry!
False alarm:

  * When suspending using the menu, the screen locks. :D
  * When suspending using "pm-suspend" it doesn't. :?

=====================================================
  Now the original issue seems to be gone. :D

  I suspend, resume, log-in: voila!
  Thanks to whoever fixed it!
  I'd be curious what it was?

Update:
The original issue is *not* gone.
It seems to only kick in if the suspend mode has been active "long enough":

When I tried "suspend+resume immediately" (just for testing) yesterday, I got the login prompt on resume, keyboard/mouse worked - everything fine.

When I suspended today (for real, not for testing) - and resumed the notebook like hours later: The issue is back.

The following command is spawned when resuming:
/usr/libexec/xfce4-screensaver-dialog --monitor=0 --height=1080 --width=1920 --enable-switch

It feels like whatever dialog window it is trying to spawn, it's somewhere not visible but capturing keyboard/mouse input.

When I switch to CLI terminal (Ctrl+Shift+F1) and kill that process, then switch back to the GUI (Alt+F7), voila: I'm back in.

Suspend/resume oddities still persist on this setup.
Updated to 20.04.3 now, which brought another interesting twist:

When waking up from suspend, the PC resumes for a few seconds, showing the login screen - then goes back to sleep. This sleep/resume/sleep/resume... cycle happens randomly around 3-5 times, until it finally stays on.

The following error message dialog (see attached screenshot) is shown after logging back in after this:

> Received error while trying to log out
>
> GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs:Type of message, "(yb)", does not match > expected type"(b)"

I've only found [a remark on that error on Reddit (3y ago, Manjaro)](https://www.reddit.com/r/xfce/comments/bej4xx/received_error_while_trying_to_log_out/), which points at an issue with a stored session.

I have the same issue with my laptop since some weeks/months, and the delay is getting longer and longer. Does anyone already found a solution/fix for this?
