I have the same problem under Linux Mint 11 64bit. The applet usually starts in Performance mode when I want the default to be powersaver. Once I switch to powersaver the applet sometimes switches to On Demand. Only after I switch to Powersaver on the 3rd try does it stay in powersaver mode for the session. But, once I restart I have to redo the settings all over again. (coming from Windows 7 this is annoying, since it saves the settings automatically and don't have to keep on switching to powersaver mode).
