Bug Description

While the two bottom corners of the screen register mouse clicks fine, the top two corners of the screen don't. Most importantly, the top right corner, which is where the close button of a maximised window will reside, does not register a mouseover or mouse click unless you move the mouse cursor 1 or 2 pixels down (you do not need to move the cursor away from the side of the screen, only the top). This may not seem like much but the most common way of closing a maximised window is to simply throw the cursor into the corner and click the close button. As it is currently, the user must position the cursor correctly in order to close the window. This is a usability nuisance that does not look good as far as Fitts' law is concerned.

Note: This affects all the shipped themes.

I think this might be the issue. It seems that Metacity was patched to be more "correct" for the new Lucid themes while sacrificing adherence to usability conventions for every theme.

Thank you for choosing Linux Mint. Is this still happening after the Final release of Linux Mint 9 Isadora? Thank you.

Yes, this bug still affects an updated Isadora installation.

FYI, this also affects Julia, at least with the Mint-X and Mint-X-Metal themes.

I've been working on trying to find the source of this issue for a few hours now and in the process had to get my head around how GTK and metacity themes fit together. I found the tiny change that needs to be made to allow you to click the close button from right in the corner in Julia's Mint-X and Mint-X-Metal themes, as well as Shiki-Colors-Metacity. I've attached a diff for both. I haven't used diffs before so I'm not sure if I've done it right but it should be fairly obvious.

I would assume that Isadora uses the same Shiki-Colors-Metacity theme as Julia, but if not the changes should be essentially the same.

Obviously it results it a minor cosmetic difference because the buttons are flush with the top of the screen, but it's certainly more practical.

This causes lots of frustration when using chromium, as if you have a maximized chromium window behind a window using metacity, clicking the very top right of the screen will close the chromium window instead of the intended window.

no longer affects: linuxmint
