I can confirm this is also a problem with linux mint 18 cinnamon. I took a couple of screen shots you can see here:

My graphics hardware:

 Card-1: Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
 Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Mars XTX [Radeon HD 8790M]

I will give the above workarounds a try.

One thing I have found that "fixes" it without logging out, change the default font to size 8. Sizes 9, 10, and 11 all have problems but 8 and 12 seem to work.
