Hi George,

Here is what I have done .... and my conclusions ... so far ...

Synaptic -->
choose
"kernel & modules"
in left menu

Here are the kernels I have just tested on the "black screen" system with results ...

Kernel = 3.13.0-37-generic
o ** Black screens at web site chrome.google.com **
o wireless mouse works
o Screen resolution sets properly at 900 pixels wide
o Wi-Fi applet on desktop works properly

Kernel = 3.13.0-39-generic & 3.13.0-40-generic & 3.16.0-28-generic ( 3 different kernels tested )
... results are the same for all three kernels ...
o ** DOES NOT ** Black screens at web site chrome.google.com **
o wireless mouse works
o Screen resolution sets properly at 900 pixels wide
o Wi-Fi applet on desktop works properly

CONCLUSION :

** 3.13.0-37-generic kernel ( as comes pre-installed with LM 17.1 Rebecca ) **

This is a highly customised kernel for and works well for Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca except some aspect in the kernel does not support the Intel GM965 chipset.

This is a critical flaw leading to Mint abandonment without a fix.

SOLUTION : some (probably) small aspect of the Intel GM965 chipset was forgotten during compiling the
3.13.0-37-generic
 kernel.
this can possibly be fixed by an appropriate dev.

Next step.

** Try and get in touch with the developers and indicate this problem **

I beleive this issue is significant becasue the GM965 is in many IBM Thinkpad T60-T61 laptops just like this one
