I've had the same problem with Ubuntu 14.04 on a T61.

I was running kernel 3.16.0-48 which seems to have been the default for LTS 14.04 at the time of this writing. I then installed 3.19.0-30:
uname -a
Linux T61 3.19.0-30-generic #34~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 2 22:09:39 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
With this, I can play YouTube videos with Chrome without --disable-gpu without problems. The command to get 3.19.0-30 installed, including the required modules, was for me:
apt-get install linux-image-
