I have seen this as well.

System continues to work fine but USB MOUSE shuts down.

Microsoft USB mouse light goes out indicating either usb port has shut down or mouse has disconnected. Keyboard on same card continues to work, front panel USB still work.

Mouse is behind/under desk so not easy to unplug and replug to see if that revives it.
