The workaround from the comment #6 helped both in Lucid and Precise Pangolin 12.04 beta2. The lockups during starting/loading of the OS after BIOS/POST) also disappeared when there is AHCI Enabled in BIOS settings.

Check the attachment for a syslog excerpt written during a jam in a Live-USB session of ubuntu 12.04 beta2 with the default HPET clocksource.

Compal has published a BIOS update a year ago, but the link is currently broken. Have somebody tried to flash BIOS?
