I am seeing this identical problem on an Ubuntu Server 9.04 (Jaunty) install, whenever there's a brief period of heavy network activity, the network locks up for a minute, with NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (r8169): transmit timed out in the logs, followed by a similar stack trace to the above posters.
