Alan: Something worth doing in the interim would be to try with hardy's kernel and see if it does the same (I can only see daily alternate installers, but booted into the expert mode I expect you can get a shell and set up the network by hand and run some stress testing on it).
If that's going to be a problem, let me know and I'll see if enough spare time shakes out of christmas to try it :)
