I tried sudo hal-disable-polling --device /dev/sr0, restarting udev, and even the firmware update. Unfortunately udevadm monitor still shows repeats of the following (about once a second):

Most noticeably annoying with the Lucid CD in the drive, as the software sources pop-up keeps appearing.
