I have this same problem on a new laptop I just purchased and installed Mint 17 64 bit on. It's a Dell Latitude e6420. Only Cinnamon crashes like this, and usually only if you're doing something that puts a little load on the CPU. I was able to keep it running long enough to install XFCE and it runs fine. Only Cinnamon has this issue, which is unfortunate, because I really like Cinnamon and I'm missing a lot of its functionality that I've come to rely on and enjoy.

My old laptop was a Toshiba Satellite L505D and I was also running Mint 17 64 and it did not have this issue.
