As for portability, linux-purge is meant for Ubuntu, so I think I can assume you are using GNU grep. (You can run "grep --version" to verify that.)

Please update linux-purge and run

linux-purge --auto-only --keep=2 --simulate --debug

Can you confirm that the broken pipe error is gone?

Please attach the file whose path is show finally.
