The problem in the description is really a bzr issue. We just run the smart server.

If the memory usage per process doesn't go down (and I don't think it will significantly in the near term) and usage increases (as we surely hope it will), then we'll need to start using multiple front-end boxes (something I've been banging on about for months). I don't think we have much choice really.
