Similarly I have noticed this problem with Epiphany on Ubuntu and with Camino on Mac OS X, but not with Chromium on Ubuntu, which suggests that it's a bug in Gecko. But it's annoying and Gecko makes up a large chunk of the user base, so it's probably worth working around.

The problem goes away for a page if I turn caret browsing on then off (F7 twice, in Firefox or Epiphany) after loading the page.

What was probably a different manifestation of the same bug was previously reported in bug 107247, but I never had time to produce a minimized test case.
