Bug Description

As noted in today's team meeting, one reason users may be emailing <email address hidden> to unsubscribe from bug mail is because the instructions on how to do this are automatically collapsed when using gmail. We know from experience that we have a large volume of users that use gmail. While we have considered this a feature, it may in fact be preventing the people we are actually targeting to understand how to unsubscribe because they simply do not see the message.

That would mean that information about unsubscribing should be moved from email's signature to the body.

That, in turn, would mean that unsubscription information would be included by default in the text that mail clients quote when replying. Which would mean that the text often would be repeated multiple times in Launchpad bug comments. So we'd be making the experience worse for everybody, for the sake of making it better for Gmail users.

We're not sure what the best solution for this might be. Another option would be to keep it exactly as is but put a single sentence with "unsubscribe" at the very top of the email in the body.

GMail is still working against you there. As far as I can tell, even moving the information about unsubscribing to the body of the email will only work for the first mail received from a bug. If identical text appears in two messages in the same gmail conversation it seems gmail will assume that's quoted text and auto-collapse it.

It might not be possible to work around gmail's braindeadness.
