The French GNOME translation team has the same problem.
Luckily the leader of the Ubuntu French translations put in place some rules (available on their wiki) telling Ubuntu translators to not touch GNOME, KDE, etc. translations and to concentrate their efforts on Ubunut specific packages.
However we still have from time to time to manually revert changes made by people who didn't read these rules ; this is really annoying, makes us loose time and sometimes give a bad impression to Ubuntu users when translations have been borked.
