I set the following:
CONTROL_HD_POWERMGMT=0 (it was "auto")
CONTROL_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT=0 (it was 1)

and the errors stopped.

CONTROL_HD_WRITECACHE was already 0
CONTROL_READAHEAD is set to 1
