If you can spare some mind cycles, here is the script that is being run by RMQ: https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server/blob/v3.7.10/scripts/rabbitmq-server
It essentially launches epmd before rmq so we should, theoretically, at least see an error message from epmd itself here.
