Using the xorg-edgers PPA fixes this for me also.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and KiCad EESchema Build (2011-05-25)-stable (the version installed from Ubuntu Software Centre).

I used the xorg-edgers PPA from:
http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppa/xorg-edgers?dist=oneiric

I ran the following commands to install:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
