That might be limiting. For example, 8-way thermal spokes are common and would not fit 4 defined locations.

A smart and automatic spoke system which could work for any arbitrary number of thermals, ideally avoiding acute angles in copper created against the pad geometry, might be universal. Easy? Probably not. But working for any pad that could be imagined with no work for users, yes.
