The situation is a little more unfortunate. Bigger cloud providers like HP also seem have implemented an auth scheme that returns the "versionId". See [1] below. It talks about a problem arisen because the "versionId" differed between "1.0" to "1".
If the "versionId" shouldn't have been present at all and the documentation reflected that, this wouldn't have happened I guess.
