I'd like to propose a pragmatic alternative to the splitting/keeping discussion. The number of votes points to that the SSL subsystem has considerable flaws.

Single bug reports are useful if the problems reported here can be tracked to limited code fragments where the bugs can be fix. But in case of a more general problem (as it looks like here), we should keep the bug open for the time being.

Instead, my proposal is to open e.g. a subpage on TechBase to collect information in a structured way. Such an analysis is more useful than a number of bug reports distributed in a bug database, mixed with off-topic comments or unrelated bug descriptions.

Once the issues have been sorted and clearly structured, the best way to solve them can be determined. Either by performing a number of smaller fixes or a major rewrite of the code. Maybe someone who is familiar with the problem and (hopefully) the code can step up and do the structuring part...
