Just for the record, Tres re-mentioned LibreOffice's quickstart mode, where it leaves a little server process around. I'm allergic to that as I read (albeit a long time ago) that it was pretty fragile. He said, though, that if supervisor could be taught to just kill the thing periodically, perhaps it worth thinking about.
